Paper mache is messy and time consuming, but some students love it. This creature was created by a sixth grader. It has a plastic peanut butter jar and egg carton cups as its base.  

 

 

When I open up weaving in the fiber center, almost every student gives it a try. They start on small 4"x6" cardboard looms. But of all the students who start a weaving, very few finish them--probably three or four per class of thirty. The student in this photo, a third grader finished her small weaving and wanted to try something larger. It took her most of her 45 minute art class to notch anc warp the loom. She worked on it for a couple weeks, and then I let her take it home (I rarely let students take work home; most of the things that go home with the kiddos disappear into backpacks and bedrooms). I let her take it home because I knew she would work on it. She brought it back to class a couple weeks ago, so that I could see the progress she'd made. Isn't it pretty?

 

 

 

 

 

This colorful creation was made at the construction center with packaging, tubes, and lots of glue. Its creator spent three entire art classes painting it! "I wanted it to be very colorful, so used lots of colors. It's a ship, and that's the steering part."
